SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA THEATRE CRITICS CIRCLE SPECIAL AWARDS

In addition to the 56 outstanding performances for Bay Area Productions in 2006, the 21 members of the Critic Circle voted for three special awards. The prestigious Paine Knickerbocker Award named for the former theatre critic of the S.F. Chronicle is presented
annually to the person or organization that has made a continuing contribution to Bay Area theatre. There was a tie vote between the New Conservatory Theatre Center (NCTC) and A Traveling Jewish Theatre (ATJT). For 25+ years, NCTC's three-theatre venue features an annual Pride Season (featuring works by renowned playwrights as well as local writers, many of which are world premieres), youth and adult theatre classes, Youth Conservatory Satellite Programs (takes theatre to high schools throughout Bay Area), and more. Founded in 1978, ATJT has produced 25 original works (many performed experimentally with guest companies from other cultural/ethnic backgrounds), performed in over 60 cities worldwide, and fostered young artists with Outreach programs.

The Barbara Bladen Porter award, named for the former arts Critic of the San Mateo Times, is presented to Kim Taylor, one of the most respected publicists in the Bay Area (15+ years).

Special awards were also presented in a tie between Ross Valley Players (RVP) and Cal Performances. Said to be one of the oldest Bay Area community theatre (100 years old), RVP survives without subsidies, produces works with community talent, and recently began "RAW," readings of new plays by local writers. Currently celebrating their centennial (100 years ago they showcased Sarah Bernhardt), Cal Performances brings to the Bay Area the best in world artists, featuring classical music, jazz, dance (versions of King Arthur, Anna Karenina, and The Seagull) and theatre, including Kabuki (Japan), Commedia del arte (Italy), Shakespeare (England), Samuel Beckett (Ireland) and a Russian version of Twelfth Night .
