By turns a love story, a humorous look at California’s alternative life style and the history of a man’s reluctant emergence from a protective cocoon, this new autobiographical play chronicles 16 times best of fringe winner Rutherford’s encounter with a dancer, the mysterious Hummingbird woman. Developed with and directed by David Ford. The Hummingbird Woman is sexually wild, forever young, a sparkling bit of light: first here, now there. In pursuit of her, Rutherford experiences a vegan diet, contact dance jams and a broadening of his middle-aged sexual horizons. Hoping to restore his youthful vigor he also endures a master colonic cleanse. In the course of this exotic journey, he comes to see that what is unusual and unsettling can also be beautiful and deeply alive. Displaying his trademark mix of music and life, Rutherford creates a compelling picture and a memorable cast of characters.
